[HAPPENING NOW] History is being made in Pietermaritzburg as the first ever SAPS POLMED Race gets underway at the uMsunduzi Athletics Stadium. This event is the start of a new tradition in the Service, driven by POLMED’s vision of wellness and healthy living for our members. 23 September 1889, in Memory of... James Sofasonke Mpanza, widely remembered as the “Father of Soweto”, was born on 27 May in Georgedale, near Pietermaritzburg, Natal. A community leader and activist, he founded the Sofasonke Party in 1935 and in 1944 led thousands of homeless families in mass land occupations that gave rise to Soweto’s modern townships.
