The August 1 detections were the fifth such set of samples in recent weeks reported positive for West Nile virus by county officials.

This is the second case of mosquito-borne illness in a person in Central Texas this year. Rain has increased the type of mosquito that carries the virus.

The first human case of West Nile virus in La Plata County was reported to the La Plata County Health Department in July, according to the county. Officials are reminding residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the virus commonly spread by infected mosquitoes.
