European and UK officials ratcheted up pressure on Israel over its decision to deepen the military incursion in Gaza, expanding the international outcry over the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict.

Britain, France and Canada called the Israeli plans for escalation “disproportionate” and “egregious” at a time when the U.N. is warning the population is at risk of famine.

France said the amount of aid Israel is allowing into Gaza is “totally insufficient,” as a U.N. official said aid trucks were yet to reach those in need.
