As was expected, AJ Smith Shawver underwent Tommy John Surgery on his pitching elbow. He will be out for the rest of the season. Infield prospect Nacho Alvarez will begin a rehab assignment.

Smith-Shawver, 22, went 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in nine starts this season. He struck out 42 batters in 44 1/3 innings. “He’s got a nice career ahead of him,” Snitker said.

Smith-Shawver told reporters after the game that he’d felt a “pop” in his elbow. He was placed on the 15-day IL with a strain the same day but transferred to the 60-day IL just 18 hours later.
