Sunderland agree a deal for 28-year-old defender Omar Alderete as their 11th summer signing for a grand total of nearly £150m.

Alderete moves to the Black Cats for a mooted fee of €15m, signing a four-year deal in the process. "I'm feeling great about signing for this great team, so I'm really happy," said Alderete, 28. " I'm looking forward to my first experience in the Premier League – it's a great challenge for me.

Alderete began his career with Cerro Porteño in Paraguay, before plying his trade in Argentina, Switzerland, and Germany. Following a loan spell with Valencia, Alderete joined Getafe on loan from Hertha for the 2022/23 season, a deal that was later made permanent.
