As hurricane season approaches, thousands of weather and disaster experts have raised concerns about NOAA and NWS budget cuts and staffing shortages

But NOAA and other forecast services say that the 2025 season may not be as active last last year's. In line with earlier outlooks, NOAA officials say they expect another active Atlantic hurricane season — and insisted that the cuts by President Donald Trump‘s administration will not affect the quality of forecasting.

Hurricane experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said they are expecting an above normal Atlantic hurricane season. The agency said it is anticipating up 13 to 19 named storms, of which six to 10 could become hurricanes and three to five could ramp up into a major hurricane, a Category 3 storm or higher.
